I have helped move friends a thousand times, and I cannot tell you how I wished there was something like pods storage back then. Most of us had to recruit friends to help, because we were starving students at the time. Pizza and cheap beer were the payment for filling the moving truck. The friend was often not packed, due to procrastination and perhaps a party the night prior. We had the more cerebral task of actually driving the truck in public, after the manual labor of loading everything in a moving truck. It continues to amaze me that a person who has a normal non commercial drivers license is allowed to rent one of these big trucks and drive it through public streets. It is when you turn the first corner in that truck and hear everything crashing down in the back, that you realize you should have left it to the professionals. Who knew you should not just put the TV on a box stacked high on that overstuffed chair? If only there was some kind of pods storage, so you would not have to worry about driving all this stuff around and breaking it.
I am a grown up now and have paid someone else to move me every time I have moved the last ten years. It is expensive, though, and you have to have your act together. You can save some money by having everything packed when the movers get there, or pay more and have them do everything. Either way, it is a rushed and harried process. The movers will start wrapping things up and packing them together, if they see anything not packed. After my first professional move, I found a very lightweight, but HUGE box, filled with various shoes that had all been individually wrapped with an enormous amount of paper. My movers charged for every box, roll of tape and swath of paper used. Had I known about pods storage, I could have done things my way.
I have seen more and more of these pods storage things on the streets of the city.I figured it was for people who did not want to pay for the full monte on the moving spectrum. When some friends of ours decided to move to California, we learned all about pods storage. In exchange for dinner and wine, we graced them with our packing skills for an entire afternoon. We took most of the boxes down the stairwell to the pods storage box parked out on the street. Our friends were able to take things downstairs and into the unit at their leisure, while the thing was parked there for a week. It was a very secure cube, with a heavy frame and a huge lock. You would have to have some heavy machinery to run away with that thing. Whatever was too heavy or cumbersome to take care of ourselves, was moved into the pods storage cube by some people they hired. The pods storage company put the unit on a truck and away it went to the West Coast. Our friends did not have to drive a truck or have a rushed day of movers at their apartment. Who knew? Poor college students are not the only ones who can use pods storage. And your friends do not have to hide when you tell them you are moving.
