Moving storage is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to move or store your belongings. However, packing moving storage isnt the same as packing a moving van. If you have never packed a storage container before, read these tips before you start packing.
When packing a moving van, you want the heaviest items to be concentrated toward the cab to make the van more manageable and to reduce the chance that heavy items will crush lighter items. Moving storage, on the other hand, does not have a "forward" or a "backward." Instead, it is intended to be shifted, lifted, turned, and stacked, so any moving container could be anywhere in the van or storage room. Focus on making the moving storage unit itself well balanced by evenly distributing the weight of your belongings across the floor of the container. Putting lighter items on the top and heavier items on the floor will add to the containers stability.
Fill in every empty space you can find, even the smallest crannies. A little room to shake can add up to big damage. Packing peanuts are useful in boxes, but not loose in the storage pod. If you do not have enough to fill the entire pod, packing peanuts tend to settle to the bottom of the pod, leaving your boxes with space between them. Instead, use towels, blankets, pillows, and other soft, washable furnishings. When you are done, try to shift the boxes, and if they move at all, add more padding.
Larger moving storage containers are often provided with eyehooks to allow you to rope your possessions down instead. Divide the container into sections, using the arrangement of eyehooks in the container as a guide, and fill each section completely. Lash it down, then fill the next section. Do not be stingy with the rope! Also make sure you know how to tie non slip knots beforehand, or you may open your container at the end of the move to find that all the ropes slackened and your belongings are in a disorganized pile.
As you pack the moving storage, remember to concentrate the weight on the bottom, not at the front. Pad everything until nothing can move, or lash everything down with rope. If you follow this advice, your things will be delivered to your new address in the same condition you put them into the unit. Enjoy the convenience of using moving storage!
