The Moving Storage Process

When you are moving, storage becomes an invaluable resource. Storage is usually a component in the process, regardless if you pay for someone else to move you or do the whole thing yourself. I have moved a lot, so have had varying degrees of experience with the whole moving storage adventure. I have moved the most labor intensive ways and the easiest. There seem to be more options now for the whole moving storage process. Perhaps all those moves made me open my eyes to some easier ways to get it done.
When I was younger, I looked for the most inexpensive route for moving. It usually consisted of bribing some buddies with beer and pizza, convincing my parents to do some heavy lifting and using a flatbed truck of one of my friends. I usually had to stash items at a storage unit somewhere in between moves, or because my new place was too small. I then progressed to renting one of those Uhaul trucks. That still required buying lots of beer and pizza for the people I would convince to help me. The worst part of the whole truck rental thing was actually driving that monster around. I cannot believe they let just anyone drive those things. Those rental trucks should be armed with loud beeping noises and flashing lights to warn people around them.
Once I was done with grad school and making money, I could hire a moving company. Now that was the way to go. Those guys came in and packed up the house faster than anything I have ever seen, zoomed away in their moving van, and brought everything into the new house. All I did was buy them some pizza (you see a trend with moving and pizza.) The downside to hiring professionals to pack and move you is that you have no control. They packed up my garbage can with trash still in it and wrapped up little things like mail they found on the counter. They packed up the house like they were a vacuum cleaner just sweeping up anything in their path. Everything was put in a storage facility until the new house was ready. We had no idea what was in there.
We are about to test our moving storage chutzpa again. We are moving to a new city in a few months. Our needs are more complicated, as we now have kids and real furniture. We do not plan on doing the move ourselves. We also are pickier than we used to be. We think we will do a hybrid move. We will do a fair amount of packing for the things we care about most. We plan to rent one of those moving storage cubes for some of the items we will not need when we first move. The box will be delivered by the moving storage people, we will move things in there ourselves, they will transport it to the storage facility. We will hire a moving crew to load the rest of the stuff and get it to our new house. Once the rest of the new house is finished, the moving storage guys will deliver the storage unit and we will unpack it. We are not looking forward to, yet another, move. I am glad we now know all the moving storage resources available to us, so we can make a less stressful move (if there is such a thing.)
