Few fictional characters in childrens books can lay claim to the hearts of as many generations as Curious George. The mischievous but well meaning monkey and the bizarre adventures he gets into as a result of his curiosity have fascinated children around the world for well over half a century. Learning various lessons along the way as the result of his misadventures, Curious George usually winds up being rescued from his various scrapes by his friend, The Man With The Yellow Hat.
With the stories and illustrations remaining largely unchanged since the first Curious George books were published in the mid twentieth century, the universal appeal and timeless charm of these books are truly exemplary for all who wish for their stories to appeal to a very little audience. Interestingly enough, the creators of Curious George, Margaret and H.A. Rey, brought their best known creation to America from their European homeland, where, as Jews, they fled the advance of Nazism during World War II. And among the few things the Reys took with them to the New World were the prototypical illustrations for the beloved little monkey that would become Curious George.
Published within a decade of the Reys setting foot on American shores, Curious George slowly but surely became massively popular with the children it was intended for, holding onto the hearts of these children even when they grew up. Curious George stories have become the type of beloved childhood memories that parents love to share with their children, and indeed, many kids have learned to read over the years with the help of these tales. As sweet, entertaining, lighthearted tales of friendship, love, life, and the eponymous cute little monkey that brings it all to life, it is little wonder that the Curious george books are as popular now as ever before.
